Glomming on the Gloaming

Art & Perception | 6 hours ago

You Gloaming commentators have done a splendid job as com-mentors. The right combination of detail, color and air seems to be at issue. In this version I have blurred the contents of the window, lightened the blues and have shown more of the right wall hanging. The left hanging cannot be retrieved without going back to the raw image. If, however, it is missed, then I’ll go back. That would be O.K. as one of my new year’s resolutions was to [...]

Spring turns to summer in Dubai

absolutearts.com | 8 hours ago

As the temperature goes up, Dubai winds down and the summer exodus begins. It is http://www.artdubai.ae/a huge contrast to the frenzy of early spring when Art Dubai becomes the axis around which so much else revolves. It was March 18-22 so it already seems like a long time ago that the press releases were cut and pasted along with endless gushing about how fantastic it all was. Critical analysis has yet to find a home n Dubai! Journalistic cynicisms aside, there [...]

Human Form

A Francis Bacon, according to an ad from Artprice in ft.com on March 31, 2008, fetches more money than a Rothko. Here is a Bacon entitled Study from the human body Contemporary artists also paint human anatomy. David Palmer paints human movement. Jacob Collins paints human subjects more traditionally as stationary form. A New York City dance group, the Ailey II dancers, enjoy popularity. Body culture is rampant in the U.S. No longer just aimed at fitness, it advocates mindful movement. [...]

MAP magazine

MAeX Art Blog | May 21, 2008 11:04PM

I see Omar Sommereyns around town pretty often and, Saturday night he asked me if I had the latest copy of MAP. No, I didn't. MAP is using the lot next to Snitzer Gallery to pick up copies and sample café cubano with temporary seating and a nice crowd. Omar has ventured into a number of projects and, I do support his efforts. So should you. MAP magazine: "Finally, a local magazine that does it right. This is the 4th (quarterly) [...]

The Author Function in Remix, by Eduardo Navas

Image sources Barthes (left): Project Narrative Foucault (right): K-punk The Author Function in Remix This text is a theoretical excerpt from one of my chapters on the role of Remix in Art. It outlines how the theories of Roland Barthes and Michel Foucault on authorship are relevant to New Media, particularly their link to the interrelation of the user and the maker/developer in terms of sampling (a vital element of Remix as discourse). While the text does place a certain [...]

I Love A Mountain Scene

From Bonny Dot Cassidy...Joseph Mallord William Turner, A mountain scene, Val d'Aosta, c.1840.Oil on canvas, 91.5x122cmFor about six months, I’d had a postcard of Turner’s A mountain scene, Val d’Aosta’ (c.1845) reproduction framed above my desk. It hung beside Antonella da Messina’s St Jerome in his labyrinthine study. The saint’s chemise, slung on a hook, is like a little fold of cloud itself; the bellies of the peacock and the partridge catches noon’s light, and I imagined that even the rough [...]

From Isobel Johnston...The 16th Biennale of Sydney opens in a just a few weeks ’Revolutions - forms that turn’, connecting past and present work.Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev will bring together ‘constellations’ and encounters rather than juxtapositions- in clusters of artists. A much more ‘organic’ rather than imposed curatorship is sought by Christov-Bakargiev so this framework does not to impose itself but can be likened to a well staged dinner party which brings together the right mix of guests who in turn fire off [...]

Overnight Art Installation day !

art esprit | May 21, 2008 02:04PM

Today was my installation day for my Overnight Art piece. Rainer and I headed out to Portsmouth around 8:30 to talk with the staff about installation. The whole install took about three and a half hours, which was fabulous due to the incredible support of the Portsmouth Parking staff, Deb Thomspon and Chris Grenier from the board of Overnight Art (and Rainer who was able to get that decal on without a hitch!) The weather held too - save for one [...]
