Architecture Review - Art Gallery of Ontario - Frank Gehry Puts a Very Different Signature on Toronto Museum - NYTimes.com “It is not a perfect building, yet its billowing glass facade, which evokes a crystal ship drifting through the city, is a masterly example of how to breathe life into a staid old structure. And its interiors underscore one of the most underrated dimensions of Mr. Gehry’s immense talent: a supple feel for context and an ability to balance exuberance with [...]
With the recession in full swing, the upcoming year will undoubtedly be a difficult one for the arts. Many crucial organizations are feeling the heat, such as New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA). Earlier this year their budget was cut $2.6 million or 6% and now they face major cut backs again. A special legislative session will convene this week on November 18th to discuss cuts, which includes an additional $7 million to NYSCA's current budget. If this proposal [...]

I would have missed this article if Rob hadn't pointed it out. With copyright issues usually almost entirely centered on money and/or the law, an important read.

Time to sign up for Private Circulation’s mailing list. Distributed through email alone, the monthly pdf just sent Art Fag City a special sneak preview of their newest issue. It’s great. Based on artist Max Gudmunson’s dispursed/lost collection of “captioned” New Yorker covers, Private Circulation asked the artist to reproduce a few of them using the publication’s cover archives. I’ve reproduced two preview images [one above and below], but you’ll want to shoot an email off to to privatecirculation[at]gmail[dot]com to [...]
Turbulence Artists’ Studios: Reflection (hope and reconciliation) by Michael Takeo Magruder [Needs Internet browser with Flash 9 plugin and stereo audio. 512 kb/s connection recommended] Pervasive mass-media in the information age offers us a continuous stream of mediated realities. Countless events of varying and often questionable significance emerge as scrolling columns of headline news and then quickly fade into the soon-forgotten annals of our time. Within this saturated datascape of history, there are singular defining moments that rise above the ubiquitous [...]
The Whisper, Washington, D.C. 2008 by Cara Phillips The photographs in Hey, Hot Shot! contender Cara Phillips' series, Singular Beauty, feel similar to Taryn Simon's An American Index of the Hidden and Unfamiliar: these are things we aren't meant to see. As Cara writes: Cosmetic surgery is now a common, if still stigmatized, part of our culture.
